A new digital TV platform is expected to launch in Malta within the next few months. Sky Malta is owned by businessman Paul Hili and two former Vodafone Group executives, Julian Horn-Smith and Andre Skol.
Local media has been excited by the possibility of a tie-up with the UK’s BSkyB, however, Broadband TV News has confirmed there is no involvement from the News Corp-controlled satcaster.
Sky Malta would join two other digital platforms in the Mediterranean country. DTT platform Go and cablenet Melita are already locked in an intense battle for sports rights. Only last month Go announced it had secured the rights to the English Premier League and Italian Serie A.
According to the local regulator Malta Communications Authority (MCA) 84% of households already subscribe to one of the existing two platforms.
