The forced abandonment of Project Kangaroo cost BBC Worldwide £9.1 million (€10.6 million), according to the annual report published by the BBC’s commercial arm.
The figure includes the total amount spent by Worldwide on the project up to March 31, 2009, as well as termination costs, and a provision for future expenses.
Project Kangaroo, the online download service developed with ITV and Channel 4, was prohibited by the Competition Commission in February.
Sales within the Channels business grew by 22.7% to £225.6 million with sales of BBC branded channels exceeding those of joint ventures for the first time. Sales in Europe increased by 17.3% on the rollout of the new suite of channels. Profits increased by 134.9% year-on-year to reach £29.6 million.
