New blow for Polish media law

The Polish President Lech Kaczynski has no intention of signing off the country’s proposed new media law.
Quoted in Gazeta Prawna, he says that the legislation in its current form is highly questionable, as it does not guarantee the financial future of the public broadcaster TVP following the scrapping of receiver licence fees.
He is also against the replacement of TVP’s regional operations with companies, the ownership of which may be questionable.
Producers’ organisations are in mixed minds as to proceed with the proposed media law: while some think it should be referred to the Constitutional Tribunal, others say the president should veto it.
