Digi TV is on the verge of securing a major football TV rights deal in Hungary.
Realdeal and Kreativ report that the Romanian-owned company, which aside from a DTH platform also operates a cable company of the same name in Hungary, has bid more than the HUF800 million (€2.86 milion) offered by RTL Klub, Hungary’s leading broadcaster, for rights to the Hungarian football championship for the 2010-2011 season.
It is understood that Sport TV, which is owned by UPC, is not expected to exercise pre-emptive rights to the championship.
Digi TV is owned RCS/RDS, which operates DTH platforms in six CEE countries including its home market, Romania.
It is expected to launch its own sports channel in Hungary this summer.
