BBC World News plans to start broadcasting in HD, according to Richard Porter, head of news, in an interview with the German website Digital Fernsehen.
At the moment, the news channel is in the process of preparing all technical facilities for HD broadcasts. There is no particular hurry, but the broadcaster wants to be prepared for a 2012 launch.
“Speed, authenticity, depth and precision will always come first. Nevertheless, we are moving fairly quickly in the direction of HDTV,” said Porter.
Given the level of co-operation between BBC World News and the domestic news channel BBC News – the two often share reports and studios – Porter’s comments suggest that the entire news operation may be in the HD format by 2012. By this time the long anticipated return to Broadcasting House from Television Centre may have finally taken place.
