What are the next steps after HDTV? 3D, or is there more? That is the subject tackled by Dr. Ralf Schäfer, head, Image Processing Department, at the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut, Berlin.
Major resources at the Heinrich-Hertz-Institut are dedicated to research on 3D and high resolution video systems. While in the area of 3D work is concentrating on multi-camera technologies, reproduction formats and video coding, pick-up and reproduction technologies play the most important role for ultra high resolution video.
One aspect is the stitching of complete panoramas (e.g. whole pitch in a football stadium) from distributed cameras. In the short term, such a system can be used as a production tool, whereas in the future, interactive services, in which the user selects its own scene element, are imaginable.
These technologies will be presented in more detail during the talk.
