Com Hem has apologised to customers after services covering close to half of its subscriber base were blacked out.
TV, telephony and broadband failed shortly before 20.00, in the middle of the Champions League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United. The spikes were so severe that the redundancy system also failed.
In total 800,000 customers were affected; television was restored by 22.00 while broadband and telephony service came back online an hour later.
Krister Tånneryd, Com Hem’s head of operations said he was saddened by the incident. “We take this interruption very seriously and will now review the backup and electricity supply to avoid a similar disruption in the future.
The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) has launched an inquiry and has requested information from Com Hem as to the cause of the incident.
