“DVB-C2: chances and challenges for cable operators” will be the subject of a presentation by Dipl.-Ing. Christoph Schaaf, head of new technologies, Kabel Deutschland, at this year’s ANGA Cable Conference.
Migrating to DVB-C2 for HDTV services, cable operators will be able to benefit from three opportunities: the coding efficiency of MPEG-4 encoders is still significantly increasing; DVB-C2 will allow 30-60% more throughput in relation to DVB-C; and the result of these.
Due to the first two opportunities, far more HDTV services will be integrated into one multiplex and thus providing a relevant additional statistical multiplexing gain. It seems to be feasible to more than double the number of HDTV services per 8 MHz cable channel, still maintaining the today’s picture quality.
