The new Polish media law will have its first reading in the country’s parliament today (April 22).
Should the legislation come into effect, it will lead to the abolition of receiver licence fees and new rules implemented on the selection of members of the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT), as well as the heads of the public broadcaster TVP and its radio counterpart.
The legislation has aroused considerable controversy amongst all the leading political parties over the last few months and is still opposed by many within the broadcast industry.
One of its most criticised elements is the introduction of a new programme licensing scheme involving TVP and the KRRiT.
