CEE in broadband slow lane

An East-West divide still exists in the penetration of broadband services in Europe, though the gap is narrowing.
The findings of the EC’s 14th Progress Report on the Single European Electronic Communications Market shows that Slovakia had the lowest penetration rate (10.9%) in the EU27 as of October 2008, just ahead of Bulgaria (11.2%), Romania (11.7%) and Poland (13.2%).
The EU27 average stood at 22.9%, with the highest penetration (37.3%) being in Denmark.
The best performing CEE country was Estonia, with an above average rate of 24.6%.
On the plus side, the report notes that nine EU countries are already ahead of the US and the EU is catching up with Japan and Australia.
