Communications minister Eamon Ryan has announced a framework for Ireland’s radio spectrum.
A framework document published last week outlines the options that will form the basis of a consultation by the communications regulator Comreg.
“Radio spectrum is one of this country’s greatest natural resources, essential for the operation of our digital, telecommunications, and broadcasting industries,” said Minister Ryan. “The increase in spectrum generated by the move to digital television will provide us with an unprecedented opportunity to grow and develop our indigenous digital economy.”
Broadcasters are continuing to look on at the digital dividend process with dismay. At DVB World in Berlin this week Lis Grete Møller, a senior consultant with Danmarks Radio, told delegates the shift to HD broadcasts anticipated by 2015 would already require a greater amount of capacity than had been allocated under the GE06 plan.
