UPC Austria to roll out DOCSIS 3.0

UPC Austria has announced it will now roll out very high speed internet services using Docsis 3.0 technology, offering bandwidths up to 100 Mbps under the UPC Fiber Power brand. They will first be introduced in Vienna, followed later by the rest of the UPC network.

TDF proposes new mobile TV model

The French transmitter company TDF has proposed a slimmed down version for a mobile TV service in order to jump start the new medium. At the moment, broadcasters and mobile operators are stuck in a gridlock over the business model.

Tele2 Vision adds Film1 Action

The Dutch IPTV provider Tele2Vision has added the chellomedia premium movie channel Film1 Action to its portfolio. The operator says it now has 247,000 multiplay customers, but has not disclosed the number of homes that actually take the TV service. 

TV viewers want improved accessibility

European viewers want a zoom function in their TV set, subtitle adjustment and choice of dubbing for every programme, according to the fifth annual UPC Television Survey, conducted in 11 European countries.

US Senate approves analogue switch-off delay

The US Senate has approved a four-month delay in the national terrestrial analogue switch-off, or the “DTV transition” as Americans call it. The measure is intended to give consumers more time to prepare for the switch-off.

50% Sky+ penetration

BSkyB has made good the premise that an economic downturn can help build pay-TV numbers by adding 171,000 new customers in the second quarter and reducing churn to below 10%.

Romania may face action from the EC for allegedly interfering in the independence of its telecom regulator.

Worldwide IPTV subscribers reach 16 million

During Q3 2008, the total number of IPTV subscribers worldwide grew 10% quarter-on-quarter to over 16 Million, according to the US research firm Dittberner. The best performing operators were France Telecom, Korea Telecom, AT&T, China Telecom and China Netcom, who all exceeded this growth rate.

Digitenne stands at 735,000 homes

The Dutch terrestrial pay-TV service Digitenne from telecom incumbent KPN now has 735,000 subscribers, having added about 65,000 during the last quarter of 2008. The operator was able to keep momentum after similar growth during Q3.

Freeview+ PVR boosts sales

Freeview is enjoying renewed success through increasing sales of its PVR product. The UK DTT platform says sales for Freeview+ boxes have reached over 900,000, representing a 118% increase between December 2007 and December 2008.
