The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has opened the tender for mobile TV licences. There will be room for two metropolitan multiplexes using the DVB-H standard.
South Africa adopted DVB-H as the standard for mobile TV in September 2007. For the moment, there is limited spectrum space available for mobile TV, but the Authority expects more frequencies to become available following analogue switch-over.
Applicants for the mobile TV licence must have a TV broadcasting or electronic communications licence to participate in the tender. The closing date for applications is February 27, 2009.
