An estimated 290 million households had the capability to view internet video at the end of 2007, of which 28 million had the ability to display internet video on a TV, according to the IMS Research study IPTV: Beyond Telco TV. By the end of 2013, this 28 million is forecast to grow to 300 million, raising 2013 revenues for related equipment to $32 billion.
Shane Walker, research analyst and author of the study, said in a statement: “We can expect more consumer electronics manufacturers to incorporate web video into their products during the first half of 2009. Recently we have seen the incorporation of online video into popular devices such as game consoles, the TiVo, Blu-ray players, and flat-panel TVs. In addition, several dedicated internet video set-top boxes, such as Roku or Vudu have recently become available”.
Despite the current economic downturn, the study forecasts that 2009 revenues for this equipment will rise, albeit from a modest installed base.
