The BBC is to introduce a version of the iPlayer for the Nokia N96 after an agreement with the mobile handset maker. A purpose-built version will be available to download from the BBC website at the beginning of next month.
The N96 came under consideration because of the optimisation of video and audio. It follows earlier work on versions for Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch.
Nokia’s so-called “entertainment phone” includes a 16GB memory, built-in 3D sound, a 2.8 in screen and a digital TV tuner.
Some new features, unique to handheld versions, may be introduced in the future. This includes aspects of social networking and geo-tagging.
