UPC Telemach explains Euro 2008 channel removals

The Slovenian cable operator UPC Telemach has clarified its decision to remove some cable TV channels during Euro 2008 that caused the Association of Croatian Societies in Slovenia to request a temporary decree against three Slovenian cable operators.

UPC claims that this is its way of meeting the demand of foreign program suppliers. Live coverage of the Euro 2008 games is legally impossible since foreign suppliers (ARD, ZDF, HRT 2), televising the championship directly or through their representative in Slovenia, announced that UPC is obliged to darken the mentioned programmes during the championship.

The rights to televise Euro 2008 are exclusively held by TV3 in Slovenia.
