Videoload, the VOD service from Deutsche Telekom, has announced it will offer Discovery programming in the 1280 x 720 pixels HD format. Programmes will cost between €1.99 and €2.99 for a 24-hour period.
UPC removes BBC World News in Amsterdam
UPC has removed BBC World News from the basic analogue tier on its Amsterdam network to make room for Animal Planet, as reported by Broadband TV News two weeks ago. From July 1, the news and current affairs channel will only be available on digital.
CETel and Arabsat launch DVB-S2 service
The German based telecom services provider CETel has announced it now offers DVB-S2 services on Arabsat-2B in C-Band. Due to the Arabsat-2B satellite coverage, this new service is designed to specifically serve CETel’s growing customers demand focused on the Gulf region, Middle East and African markets.

Euronews channel today said it will join SatLink’s AsiaSat 2 MCPC digital platform to extend its coverage in the Asia Pacific region.
Numericable launches HD VOD
The French MSO Numericable has said it will expand the VOD offer within its Video Club with HD content from CinéPlay, TF1 Vision and I-Concerts. Programmes are available in 1920 x 1080 and are streamed at 11.25 Mbps.
PT wins Portugal DTT licence
Portugal Telecom has been told that it has won the tender to operate the country’s DTT service, the telco has confirmed. PT had bid for the right to run the public multiplex that will carry four free-to-air channels and a subscription TV service.
Naspers sells MultiChoice Greece
South African media group Naspers has confirmed the sale of its Greek and Cypriot pay-TV business NetMed in which it owned 87% to the Greek telecommunications company Forthnet.
Kangaroo must jump Competition bar
The three public service shareholders in proposed online project Kangaroo have expressed their disappointment at the decision by the Office of Fair Trading to refer it to the Competition Commission. The process will delay the project by at least 26 weeks while the Commission makes its deliberations and collects further evidence.

Laven takes DVB chair
Theo Peek is retiring as chairman of the DVB Steering Board and is being replaced by former EBU technical director Phil Laven. The decision was made on Thursday at a meeting that also gave the go ahead for the new DVB-T2 standard.
