The European Commission may be asked to look into proposed controversial changes to Poland’s media legislation. Put forward by the new PO-led government, they would see the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) stripped of most of its powers and reduced to a merely advisory role, with the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) taking on a much more prominent role. It would be empowered, for instance, to impose fines on broadcasters and rule on media concentration issues. The KRRiT says it would like the EC to look into the proposals, which in its view would give the government overall control of the broadcast industry.
