Virgin Media has said that it plans to relax the restrictions on usage for its broadband internet customers first introduced in May this year. The cablenet is reducing the period of time when it monitors the use of its broadband network by three hours. It will now run from 16.00 to 21.00.
The company says that by monitoring the amount of traffic on its network during peak times it is able to provide faster downloads for all of its customers.
Surveys of the Virgin Media network have shown that just 3% of customers can impact on traffic and it is these customers that continue to be monitored. There is some overlap between the top 3% uploaders and the top 3% downloaders.
The changes will take place in the New Year on a region-by-region basis.
