Russia has taken a major step on the road to digitalisation. According to a local report, its first deputy PM Dimitry Medvedev has approved a plan from the transition to digital broadcasting between 2008-2015 following almost two years of debates between various ministries and the Russian Television and Radio Broadcasting Network (RTRS).
Costing between $6 billion (€4.09 billion) and $14 billion, it envisages providing all viewers in the country with 5-6 national channels and one regional service, free-to-air (FTA) and in the DVB-T standard, by 2015. The plan is now to be considered by the government.
