Following the success of the world music section on the National Geographic website, the company has now confirmed reports that it will launch a dedicated music channel to be called Nat Geo Music. The channel will first launch in Europe and will be supported by a number of other multimedia products including an interactive website and podcasts.
The music channel is part of a drive into the music and radio business with the creation of a special division to accompany its existing TV, film, magazine and digital units, and is called National Geographic Music and Radio (NGMR). For many years, the Society has been making ‘Radio Expeditions’ for American public radio NPR. Now, it wants to extend its business into music as well.
Nat Geo Music will be first launched on Sky Italia on October 15, featuring content from music labels EMI Arabia, Warner Music Latin America, Sony/BMG Asia and Universal Italy.
