TeliaSonera has partnered with broadcaster TV4 and games developer SimBin to create Virtual Grand Prix. The competition takes place entirely in the virtual world of the racing game Race 07. Budding ‘drivers’ can download a free game demo from the vgp.se site and compete for a drive in the weekly finals that will be screened on TV4 Plus. Coverage of the competition will also be carried on TV4 Sport with the winner receiving a SEK100,000 (€10,715) prize.
TeliaSonera International Carrier will provide and manage the online infrastructure so that competitors are not hampered by technical difficulties.
“We believe that this is the first time that a mainstream TV network has aired an entire series based on a competitive online tournament with in-game TV production. This is an indication that traditional media recognises the value, reach and appeal of the online gaming community” said Anna Mossberg, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing, TeliaSonera International Carrier.
The VGP tournament was created by Gaming Media Group. Online qualification began on August 1 and the programme will air on TV4 plus for 10 weeks commencing September 16.
