The increasing impact of the digital terrestrial ‘TNT’ network has resulted in an overall fall in the audiences to the thematic channels from 36.9% in June 2006 to 36% in the first six months of 2007.
According to the twice yearly Mediacabsat survey, TNT has resulted in further fragmentation of the audiences with only the premium Canal+ Sport on 2.1% passing the 2% audience threshold. A year ago five channels attained an audience higher than 2%.
Eurosport remains the leader among the basic channels, but with an audience falling to 1.8% from 2.4% last year, when the Turin Olympic Games and the soccer World Cup formed a part of the schedule.
MTV has edged in front of rival MCM to become the most popular music channel in France among its 15-24 target audience. MTV has continued to progress in the French market since it began local language programming in October 2005.
