News Corp. has expanded its broadcast interests in Central and Eastern Europe by moving into Latvia. According to the company, it acquired 100% and 70% stakes in the national commercial stations LNT and TV5 respectively for unspecified fees earlier this month. News Corp. already has a presence elsewhere in the region in Bulgaria (bTV) and Poland (TV Puls). In the latter case, the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) is likely to look into the ownership of the station following suggestions that it is now effectively controlled by News Corp. despite the majority owners (Franciscan Brothers) recently increasing their stake to 70%.
