With the launch of eyeVio Sony is entering the ring of User Generated websites and hopes to take on YouTube – at least on the Japanese market for now. Users can easily upload their clips to the site, but are also able to make a clip of still pictures. Should the venture be a success, Sony will take the concept outside Japan. “This is part of Sony’s quiet software revolution,” Sony CEO Howard Stringer said at a news conference in Tokyo last Thursday.
Interestingly, the website also makes it easy to download videos into Sony devices, such as the Walkman or PSP. Users will also be able to specify who can view their content, and how long video will remain available on the service. The company also claims it will monitor the uploads to make it “a safe enviroment for advertisers.” Advertising and future media partnerships should pay for it.
