Iceland’s ministry of transport, the public broadcaster RÚV and satellite company Telenor have reached an agreement to distribute RUV over satellite. The aim is to reach rural areas in the country, which are still without a permanent TV service, and ships at sea.
The agreement is part of the ministry’s 2005-2010 telecommunications plan that calls for the development of broadcasting services into rural areas. It is estimated the project will cost around ISK150 (€2.2 million) over the next three years.
In addition to RÚV’s television service, two radio channels will also be broadcast. Transmissions are scheduled to commence in April this year and will be capable of being received across North-western Europe. Conax conditional access will restrict the signals to authorised viewers.
The signal will be uplinked from Reykjavik and distributed from Telenor’s satellite capacity at one degree West, meaning that the position will now house all of the Nordic public broadcasters.
