CABLE CONGRESS – AMSTERDAM. The European Cable Communications Association, Cable Europe, has reported a 53% increase in digital cable penetration. In his opening statement to the Cable Congress, Manuel Cubero, president of Cable Europe and a member of the management board of Kabel Deutschland said that 2006 had been a landmark year with double-digit growth across all the market sectors.
“This is not only good news to have this solid growth, but if you look back from 2006, we’ve doubled our revenues as an industry in six years,” said Cubero. He said that the addition of four million subscribers was probably higher than in the United States, which represented a real milestone, adding that it was no longer just the UK that was driving digital growth: “We’ve left behind us the days when the other big countries in Europe were under developed.”
Data collated by Screen Digest with support from PriceWaterhouseCoopers and ING also showed an increase of 26% in broadband penetration, and a 21.6% year-on-year increase in telephony subscribers, the highest since the service was initiated. The introduction of VoIP during 2007 is likely to fuel further growth.
Cubero confirmed that next year’s Cable Congress would take place in Madrid supported by local operator ONO, and the Municipality of Madrid.
