The Scientific-Atlanta name is to be phased out over the next 12 months. Senior management have taken the decision to initially use the Cisco name on IPTV receivers, but this will be extended over the next to cover more, but not necessarily all, of Scientific-Atlanta’s product range. Scientific-Atlanta now forms a part of Cisco’s Routing and Service Provider Technology Group.
“It makes sense that at some point we become Cisco,” a Scientific-Atlanta spokeswoman told Broadband TV News. “We just want to make sure when we make the change it is best for our customers and the consumers who have our products in their homes and that the business is set up to support this change”. She added that it would not necessarily make sense to go back and change the name of legacy products.
Cisco’s $6.9 billion acquisition of Scientific Atlanta was completed in February 2006. The company continues to be a key supplier of cable receivers in Europe and recently began a new shipments of its Explorer digital video recorder product to NTL Telewest.
