Slovenia’s Agency for Post and Electronic Communications (APEK) has chosen the MPEG-4 transport stream as the standard for digital terrestrial television in the country. The agency will shortly commence the DTT licensing process.
The majority of other European countries that have so far announced their technical parameters have all opted for the MPEG-2 standard. The most recent country to select MPEG-4 is Norway, which will benefit from being late to the party, and allow the option for high definition transmissions after digital switchover.
However, MPEG-4 brings with it a more efficient means of managing the spectrum. “Considering the present as well as future needs, the choice of mpeg-4 is economically and strategically justified,” said the regulator. (JC)
